Changyeob (C.Y.) Ok is an interdisciplinary artist based in Seoul and an Assistant Professor in the School of Art & Technology at Chung-Ang University. His practice is rooted in encounters with invisible physical phenomena and the technologies developed to sense them. Working across installation, moving image, sound, and performance-based collaboration, he explores forces that pass through bodies and environments while remaining largely unnoticed.

Originally trained in electronic engineering, Ok participated in space science research projects, including a NASA-led initiative on cosmic radiation detection. Experiencing invisible particles—cosmic rays and muons—becoming perceptible only through instruments prompted a lasting shift in his thinking, raising questions about technology, perception, and human vulnerability. This led him to pursue art, studying sculpture and expanded media at the Cleveland Institute of Art and completing an MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

His work often employs sensors and computational systems not to explain scientific phenomena, but to create situations where perception feels partial or unstable. Ok has participated in residencies including ZER01NE by Hyundai Motor Group, Hongti Art Center, and the Arctic Circle Residency, and has exhibited internationally, including at Ars Electronica. His practice continues to unfold through collaboration and research, staying with moments when unseen forces briefly come into view.

옥창엽, Changyeob (C.Y.) Ok은 서울을 기반으로 활동하는 다원예술 작가이자 중앙대학교 예술공학부 조교수이다. 그는 우리가 직접 보거나 느끼지 못하지만, 늘 주변에 존재하는 물리적 현상과 그것을 감지하기 위해 만들어진 기술에 관심을 두고 작업해왔다. 설치, 영상, 사운드, 퍼포먼스 협업 등 다양한 형식을 통해 신체와 환경을 통과하는 보이지 않는 힘들을 다룬다.

전자공학을 전공한 그는 예술 활동 이전에 NASA 주관 우주과학 연구 프로젝트에 참여하며 방사선 감지 장치를 개발했다. 이 과정에서 우주 방사선과 뮤온처럼 눈에 보이지 않는 입자들이 기계를 통해서만 인식되는 장면을 직접 경험했고, 이는 강한 인상을 남겼다. 기술이 인간의 감각을 확장하는 동시에, 우리가 얼마나 제한적인 존재인지 드러낸다는 사실은 이후 그의 작업 전반을 관통하는 문제의식이 되었다.

이러한 경험을 계기로 그는 과학 연구의 현장을 떠나 예술로 방향을 전환했다. 클리블랜드 예술대학에서 조소와 확장미디어를 공부했고, 시카고 예술대학에서 Art & Technology Studies 전공으로 석사 과정을 마쳤다. 이후의 작업에서는 과학적 현상을 설명하거나 시각화하기보다는, 감각이 완전히 작동하지 않는 상태, 인식이 어딘가 어긋나는 순간을 만드는 데 집중해왔다.

옥창엽은 현대자동차 ZER01NE, 홍티아트센터, Arctic Circle Residency 등 국내외 레지던시에 참여했으며, Ars Electronica를 포함한 여러 국제 전시에 작품을 선보였다. 그는 협업과 리서치를 중요한 작업 방식으로 삼아, 보이지 않는 것이 잠시 감지되는 순간에 머무르며 질문을 이어가고 있다.
